The City of Rockford, Water Division will celebrate water by recognizing the essential role drinking water plays in our daily lives, with special attention on the ways in which all water consumers can get to know their H2O.
What do you know about H2O?
Did you know..
The City of Rockford Water Utility was established in 1874.
The original pumping station was built in 1875 on Park Avenue.
You can read more about the history of the Water Division on the Water Division's History Site...
Did you know..
• There is no new water. All the earth’s water supply formed along with our planet.
• More than 97% of it is salt water.
• Only 3% of the earth’s water is fresh water and 99% of that is frozen in glaciers or buried deep in the earth.
• So we can access and use less than 1% of all the earth’s water.
Did you know..
• Americans use 3 to 10 times more water than most people throughout the world!
• Each of us directly uses about 150 gallons of water every day!
• Including indirect uses we each use almost 1400 gallons of water a day!

Flushing Season has begun! - April 16, 2013
City crews have started the flushing program for 2013.
Flushing is done annually to maintain water quality. With the use of computerized mapping, the City of Rockford has developed a unidirectional flushing
program. Unidirectional flushing consists of closing specific water system valves to create one way flow and then opening hydrants in a consecutive manner. This increases the speed of the water flow in the pipes. These high velocities produce a scouring action in the pipes, removing even the most stubborn deposits. Flushing crews may be in your area at any time during flushing season, April through November. Pictured is a flushing crew excited about getting the new year started!
Fire flow Testing has begun - April 15, 2013
Fire flow testing is done to determine how much water is available for fire protection. City Crews will flow test to
ensure the presssure is at a level that is consistent with the needs of the Fire Department. The Water Division takes your safety serious and continues to strive for excellence everywhere. These tests are performed to ensure adequate pressure throughout the system in the unfortunate event of a fire.
