Patrol Shifts
The Patrol Shifts are comprised of uniformed patrol officers. One lieutenant and five sergeants command each shift. Patrol Shift Officers respond to all calls for police service, conduct preliminary investigations, apprehend offenders, recover stolen property, conduct crime prevention and suppression activities and enforce criminal and traffic laws.
- K-9 Unit: Rockford Police Canines are used in a variety of ways; one of the most common uses is for drug detection. Canines may also assist in tracking, locating and apprehending suspects. Our canines have received extensive training and with their keen sense of smell, often locate suspects in locations where officers may not have been able to. In addition to finding and apprehending the actual suspects, the canines may also be used to search for articles dropped or hidden by fleeing suspects, such as weapons or clothing. The Rockford Police Department currently has one explosive detection canine.
- M3 Streets Team: the M3 Streets Team was developed to pro-actively address crime and other quality of life concerns within specifically identified geographical areas. The M3 Streets Team is assigned to and assists the afternoon and night patrol shifts.
Central Reporting Unit
The Central Reporting Unit consists of uniformed Patrol Officers who work at the Rockford Police front desk located inside the lobby of the Winnebago County Public Safety building. Central Reporting Unit Officers perform many functions vital to the overall operation of the Department including all front desk duties and the operation of the Deferred Police Response system (Police reports taken over the phone). The Central Reporting Unit handles 25% of the Police Department’s reports.

Community Services Unit
The Community Services Unit consists of Rockford Police Officers who are responsible for developing crime reducing and problem solving partnerships with the citizens and businesses in their areas. Officers within this unit employ both traditional and non-traditional methods to solve these problems. Officers may take an educational approach to problem solving by educating the business in their areas on the topics of armed robbery prevention, business security or work place violence. Citizens may receive training in the areas of home repair fraud, senior citizen scams or financial identity theft. Community Service Officers are also available to conduct home security surveys. School Liaison Unit
The School Liaison Unit was developed to establish positive working relationships between police, school administration, educators, service agencies, parents, and students. The goal of the School Liaison Unit is to maintain a safe, secure environment, free of violence and fear, which will allow the educational process to occur in a natural and uninhibited manner.
Traffic Unit
The Traffic Unit is responsible for the reduction of traffic crashes through traffic law enforcement and traffic crash investigations.
